Human element above "isms" Because he believed that fraternity was more efficacious than violence he succumbed to violence. Because he believed that wisdom was more fecund than blind passion, he was struck down by a fanatic. Over and above automatic hatred and prejudice, he was the spirit. Over and above nationalism and imperialism, he was the human element. Is it a sign of the times that he was struck down not in spite of, but on account of this?
