Bajajwadi, Wardha
Connection with Gandhiji
Gandhiji visited Bajajwadi several times during his stay at Wardha and Sevagram from around the mid-1930s.
Background
Bajajwadi was the residence of noted industrialist and Gandhiji’s close associate Jamnalal Bajaj. It became ‘a national guest house during the freedom movement’. Wardha was the base of many of Jamnalal Bajaj’s activities. A branch of Satyagrah Ashram, Ahmedabad was started at Wardha in 1921.
After Dandi March and subsequent imprisonments, Gandhiji shifted his headquarter to Wardha as he had pledged not to return to Ahmedabad’s Ashram till the swaraj was not attained. The decision made Wardha the center of the freedom movement.
Place in History
Bajajwadi served as a guest house and meeting place for many prominent leaders, freedom fighters, and other people visiting Gandhiji. Bajajwadi hosted meetings of the Congress Working Committee as well as many other constructive activities. Gandhiji took part in those meetings. It also hosted many national and international visitors, leaders, associates, workers, and journalists. Gandhiji met Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose Maulana Azad, Sarojini Nayadu, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Rajendra Prasad at Bajajwadi.
